I have a homemade version of the cold duck (we call it the Cajun 40) anyway, it has been great. I run 38.5 SX's / 4:56. I run it on the interstate at 65+ and just crawled everywhere at Superlift (thanks to the tire gooving too!!) so that is a very do-able option.
our club guys have all,
dual Dana 20 = not the strongest, light,
203/205= very strong but HEAVY and long.
Atlas = gears are smaller than Stak, but price is cheaper and dependable.
Stak= built strong, has had some issues with 3 of the 5 guys I know. mostly poping out of gear.

I have talked to several that are running one or have in the past. Due to the way it's rotated it is prone to leak at the shift rail but some have had no leaks. The one I looked at OCBR was dry, no leaks. I haven't emailed, or talked with anyone using a cold duck that didn't have more good things than bad to say about it. When I bought the one I have I spoke with Rich at Wildhorses and he dug up all the info he could for me and sent it to me. I also have an article that describes the building and installing of one. I tried posting it here but too big, am willing to email it to those that would like a copy. Mine will be installed in the next few months and I will add as much info as I can after that happens.

Mine leaks at the shift rail. I don't think the rail seals were meant to have oil behind them all the time. The leak is really minor. I think I may eventually replace it with an Atlas or mini STak.

I paid $350 each for my PitBulls, they are 39.5x16.5 with a 17" wheel. I love them by the way!

You are right on track with lower gears you crawl instead of right footing it. That does save a bunch on body damage. But it is inevitable, you will get some damage sooner or later.

My cold duck mounting bolts loosen during every trail ride, so it leaks pretty badly. We are tearing it out this Winter, and fabbing a rear secondary crossmember for it.


If memory serves, they had a good reputation for leaking badly.

Thanks, JW for the email.

My 203/205 doubler seeps a little too, it comes from the 203. I have only put about 1/2 quart of lube in it in the past 3-4 years. The extra crossmember might help it from loosing up and leaking, but I don't know if it will fix it.

sorry about the late reply, I call it homemade but the major parts were made by a good friend that runs a major gear company.... and has a machine shop at his house...
he made the shaft and alum adaptor plate, we halfed a d20 housing and welded a plate.

I'd say it wouldn't hold up under 350hp and 1 ton running gear, but for my rig with c4/d44/ 9" with 38.5's it's held up very well. JD

btw:cool spreadsheet idea!!
