M5R2 synchro differences

I’ve finally settled on the M5R2 for a trans swap. I like the idea of the shifter location of the 99+ but looking at rebuild kits that generation has a three piece 2nd gear synchro which costs an extra $300 versus the prior years. Is that synchro design enough of an improvement to be considered or am I better off with an 88-97 trans, swap out just the shifter, and spend that $300 elsewhere?
