I'm not polling if I'm crazy or not (at least not in this thread).

My good friend Shamu hooked me up with these awesome salvaged door panels to play with and Yeller brought them over during a visit. So I decided to paint a Bronco logo in rust. Not paint that looks like rust, but real rust.

Photo 1 is fresh from Shamu's garage
Photo 2 I painted a coating of primer so the solution doesn't eat through the door
Photo 3 is the first layer of iron paint. This is just tiny iron particulates suspended in a carrier paint. It's like painting with baby powder
Photo 4 is the bucking bronco next to a photocopy of the emblem. I need to build up layers of the iron particulates to be able to add a 3D effect. And then I added the acidic solution and copper salts to the top. I let the solution pool up on areas I wanted to have a stronger reaction. Now I'm painting with chemicals - so much fun
Photo 5 and 6 are how the two bucking broncos turned out!
Photo 7 is the finished panels

Now my question. Right now I have black arm rests and door cups. Would these look ok on the panels? I'm thinking they will stand out too much? My other options are to either buy new parchment ones but they will be super bright and clean looking and I think it'll look cheap on top of the patina on the panels.... Or I can buy old parchment color ones off someone - but the ones' I've seen are cruddy looking and might look out of place on my otherwise nicely restored Bronco. Any opinions?

First of all, those are flipping awesome! :D
Very nicely done!

I think I'd probably go with new parchment, and I don't think it would look out of place, but that's purely my opinion.

Oh man!!!, or should I say woman ;) This board has so much talent, and you are at the TOP IMO.

Thank you BronCowie! I'm trying to mix a little bit of barn find with my garage queen.

I'm thinking next I might try to paint with rust on steel Bronco portraits similar to the ink on paper I've been doing for people....

I don't think it would look bad at all. If you like/love it that's all that matters

No need to poll if your crazy or not we know the answer to that:p

I voted black but with a twist, die them parchment. They won't look so new and you could even add patina accents if you want. And as always a unique and outstanding bit of art.

Nice work Ksm!

I've never been a fan of parchment for arm rests, door cups and seats. Any way to duplicate your process on some parchment for a better compliment of your work?

Shoot that's sweet! If it were me I'd try and see if I could match some brown leather to it if it's possible. I love the rustic look!

Wait, how do you dye black plastic parchment? Like, paint them? Plasti-dip? :p

With all the handling the arms rests would get, and the fact that the rust would be sitting on top of plastic (or whatever that cushy material is) I think the color would rub off. I could paint them brown I think but my "color scheme" for the Bronco is the green, parchment and black.

Here's a shot of the inside of my Bronco now. Everything but the dash is repainted. I wanted to keep the original patina on the dash.

Duplicolor and Eastwood both make a vinyl and plastic die/paint that works great and is wear resistant. If you get tired of it or want to try something else its easy and inexpensive. The option will always be there to be able to buy new replacements if you want something more original.

EDIT:

I found the information. I've used this in the past on other projects and have been very pleased. Following all the instructions and using the prep spray is important, but it does work as advertised. I've even had reasonable success on high wear parts like steering wheels.

I checked the link and didn't see a parchment, or something close, color.
Does this look like it'd be the same sort of product?
