Installing Bailie Bilt bumpers

So I finally bit the bullet and got a pair of Bailie Bilt bumpers. The problem was going to be making my tilt over front clip work with a bumper and a winch sticking up like it will. Here’s all the pics I’ve got and maybe a comment or two to go with specific pics. I’ll be sure to get good pics of how it attaches because I can’t find any pics of that info.

And after all the hacking of welds…. (Which was much easier than I thought. I guess my homemade bumper wasn’t attached as solidly as I’d thought when I built it??)

And here’s where I’m at. The drivers side hinge is preventing me from getting the center section all the way in the frame. But you can see that I’m going to have to redesign the hinge system. The redesign will allow for my new fenders to go on without cutting as they have been since I built and started driving this rig.

You'll have to raise up on the grill and it will roll out, the fenders pulling forward from the doors. and then it will flip up. I might do all this with linear actuators that can act to hold the hood down in place. There will be some kind of wedge pieces that squeeze into place as the hood closes into place on top of the firewall. I have the design in mind, but I'm not sure what materials I'll be able to find. AND TIME IS RUNNING OUT for OCBR....

I'm just sitting here thinking that I should cut off the 3/8 plate that used to be the main support for the bumper pipes. I might could use those for the hinge "links." I guess that's what I'll call them?

How about making a tilt mechanism for the bumper and the winch to tilt forward, then tilt the front clip forward, after the bumper and winch is out of the way?

thought about it. Given Gordon's design on the mounts, I think i'll be better off with a simple double hinging link. I need to get some drawings to illustrate my design.

Well, it appears this program is not capable of moving the number of links I need to manipulate. I guess that's what I get for using freeware software?

So the red line in the attached pic would be the "hinge link" when the hood is closed. Both ends of the curved lines would pivot. The red line would rotate up, following the yellow curve. The blue line is the general shape of the link in the open position. From this position, the hood stands up on its nose. This isn't too complicated and I'd probably use a 12v linear actuator to raise it and lock it into position, up AND down.

In fact, I'd probably drop the top end of the red line down under the bottom of the grill for better cosmetics. The absolute requirements of the linkage are 1) that the grill will not be able to move to the rear at any place in its motion and B) that the grill rolls up over the top of the winch that will stick up about 8-10 inches over the winch plate you can barely see in the pic (just below the red curve.)

Thanks Yeller! That got me thinking a bit more. I found these videos on Youtube and I'm posting them here mainly for my own notes.

More pics.

Looks like, once the bumper CAN go all the way in the frame, there will be no room for the clip to move forward like it will need to do to rotate up and not catch the bottom rear of the fender on the door or door post.

So I took a slight risk and cut the drivers side hinge off so I can get the bumper all the way in. And I found there’s still some trimming to do before the passenger side will go all the way.

The red line shows the hinge link I’m going to try. Not sure what I’m going to use for materials yet, but that’s the direction I’m going.

I will also have to squeeze the winch as far forward as I can because the bottom of the grill HAS to clear the winch for the rear of the fender to go all the way up and out of the way.
