Ford 400 Motor from 1977 F150

I found a Ford 400 motor that's in a F-150 in a junkyard. The guy told me that the motor has a "Big" bolt pattern for the motor, so I'm not sure this motor will fit into my Bronco. I have an NP435.

I have thought about stroking a 351W to a 393 or 408, but BAX, Devin, Ryan, BroncoBowsher, and BMC69, and some other members have said that I should look at the 400 and stroke to 466 or 496, or just run the stock 400 which will produce good numbers. Thoughts?

If this 400 that I found will not work, please let me know which 400 I should look for? And, what year and truck/van models should it come out of? I'm getting the spring itch again.........

351 m and 400's have different motor mounts and will need a different bell housing . If you are going to all that work you may as well put in a 460 !! Dollar for dollar you will get alot more for your money building a 302 or 351 w plus less mounting headaches!!

There are a few vocal people on this board that will tell you it will fit. More correctly it can be made to fit.

The reason he mentioned the big bolt pattern was there is a little used 400 that had the small block pattern on it. Thus the need to distinguish small and large patterns

Personally I am not overly impressed with a 400. I would much rather have a 351W as the aftermarket support is so much better for it.

The 400 is a bolt in. Use the motor mounts that are on the 150 just swap sides. the big bolt pattern is no problem with the standard trans. Stock exhaust manifolds will work too. A new cam will work great, get rid of the stock retarded cam. If you have the cash a set of Aussie heads will be a big improvement. Really there is no extra work putting the 400 in an EB. There is also not much extra space afterwards. Pulls like a big dog. If you got a 400 already I see no reason to get a 351

Well first you say 400 and now it's a 460? The 460 is no where as easy as the 400. keep in mind the 400 and the 351W share a plethora ( word of the day, must use it in a sentence.) of design similarities. The 460 is a different animal all-together.

Many 351w can be found in E150 vans 77 to mid 80's . Mine came from a 79 van . If find one , use the fly wheel too, 351w are balanced different from a 302

You found the right 400 to run with that NP435. Is the 400 complete and running? You can change the bell housing to the "big block" bolt pattern. These 400 guys can walk you through the rest. Getting that 460 finished and in your Bronco would be a costly chore. You'll do fine, seeing as though you didn't put an "M" after the 400;D

If you already have your hands on a 400 then that is the cheapest way you can build and install a 408. If you are starting frm a clean sheet of paper and include the 'bell housing factor' then a 408W stroker may be the better way to go, recognizing that you will also have to go with aftermarket heads to really wake it up. Of course the other issue is EFI..it takes more scrounging and adapting to get an EFI system on a 400 (or any Cleveland for that matter) than it does a 351W.

Since we are on the subject..... Are the heads on the 351m and 400 the same in a 77 f150? My friend just got a 351m out of a 1977 f150 for free. If he uses of course he is installing a 400 crank. Would the stock 351m heads be ok for a very mild build? Or should they be trashed and not even considered

I am intrigued by the thought of a 400 in a bronco. Educate me BMC69.

He got the 351m, np435, and 205. All together for free. GRRR

Nice for free. The heads are the same on both engines. yes they would work fine on a "very mild build" There are lots of improvements you can do to the 400 but I will let BMC69 educate you like you asked.

You can play too BAX.;D

I am doing a little reading around the net. Not a whole lot of info out there for the 351m/400. Or maybe I am just not finding it.%)
