Bronco Tow Rig Thoughts... EcoBoost

2013 Ecoboost Crew Cab. 68,000 miles. Owned it since new. No major problems. Pulls like a beast but if you are looking at the Ecoboost for gas milage don't count on it. I run 65 highway, 35 percent city and my lifetime average is only 14 1 mpg. Only 3000 of those miles were pulling a trailer. The rest of the time it is typically just me.

I'm undecided between the faithful 5.0 or the 3.5 Eco.
Thanks
2015 3.5 Eco owner here, had the truck for a little over a year and very happy with it. I travel mostly rural roads and average around 20-21 mpg. Both the 5.0 and 3.5 Eco are good motors but make their power at different rpm ranges. I love the low end torque the Eco makes. As far as miles per gallon on the Eco you can have economy or boost, you just can't have them at the same time.

Got a couple of the new alloy body F150s at work. Nice ride. Plenty of power. Chassis is crap when towing a big load. They are easily worse then the old iron body F150s. They may have sky high tow ratings, and the engine to pull it, but it will wear you out driving any distance. Had them checked, "nothing wrong", and it is every one of the new ones that is the same way so no one off oddity.

I've had my Transit 150 for a year. Average mileage is 16. pulls the Bronco very well. Cruise control holds 70 up most grades. Worst towing mpg was 6.7, strong head wind and was running fast. Best tow 10.3 mpg, ran under posted limit most of the time. This is recorded mpg not dash readout.
Happy with general mpg and willing to pay for faster tow. The engines power is amazing. I find my self having to soft pedal when getting on interstate. I believe I have the lowest axle gears offered.
FYI on vans... the T150 has a higher tow capacity than the T350 does.

2012 F150 FX4 Ecoboost here. About 38,000 miles - owned since new. SCT performance tune added at 2 months after I bought her and towed the Bronco about 500 miles round trip through a bunch of hills at speed. Four years old last month and I've not needed any extra power for towing (Bronco or equiv car/truck). Gas mileage does not live up to the hype. Mostly city and I get maybe 15 with the performance tune. Highway up to 65 and she gets 23. Push it to 70 and it's down to 20. At 75-80, it's 18. I only tried the fuel saver tune on the highway once and barely noticed 1 mpg increase. It's not worth the hassle to swap out the tunes. I'm too lazy.

No help here. Daily driver 95 F150 5.8 gets lousy mileage loaded or empty but it's paid for. I tow with a 03 F250 Superduty with a 1st gen 6.0 that gets around 15 in town and 19-20 hwy. Gets around 11.5 towing the bronco. Not great mileage but it's paid for as well. I can buy a lot of gas and diesel for the cost of a new truck so I'll keep mine. ;D

Like Nick over at Nick's Trix, I have the 2011 Eco. Mine is the Lariat 4x4 s.Crew. with 3.73's. I have just turned 80,000 miles on it with my computer saying I have towed various Broncos across the states logging in 10,600 of those miles with a rig in my rear view mirror on a 1,600 lb car hauler. Mileage has been all over the map but only because of what I was into: city has averaged 16-17, highway 18-20, towing 10-12. Knock on wood, no issues at all.
Only reason I'd go to a diesel at this point (truck paid off, woo-hoo) is I'd really like to get an enclosed trailer for towing;) With the Bronco on a car hauler, I think it's the sweet spot for about as much as I would want to tow weight wise.

Now, just because that is my opinion, doesn't mean I necessarily agree with it. (love that line,,,:))

I tow 6K to 8K pound trailer when loaded. I get 13MPG doing this going 70MPH on the highway. Unloaded highway at 70 is 17/18. I go up 7* grades without downshifting out od overdrive. pulling 22 pounds of boost the whole way up with the loaded trailer. If I go over 70 MPH my MPG drops off pretty good. I have lots of room and seat 4 real nice. I dont have an EGR. I dont need to regenerate. I drive arguably one of the best ford trucks ever made.
Any guesses on what I drive?

7.3 super duty?

The 95-97 F350s are better looking IMHO but the super dutys do have a bit more motor.

FWIW I just unloaded my bronco from a dunes trip and averaged 9mpg with my 13 ecoboost for the trip running very close to 70mph the whole way.

As for the EcoBoost
My 2013 SCREW with the max tow package was great. Towing the Bronco it would walk away from a Chebby C-10 with a 350 towing 1 4 wheeler.

Thanks guys for the great replays. Time to start hunting and from the responses I won't shy away from the eco boost rigs.

Thanks

I'm with you on this!

I have a '99 7.3L, 2 wheel drive, extended cab. It is the perfect tow truck for me. Yea, it drives like a school bus, but it doesn't back down from a load either. It's got 170K on it now and I run Amsoil engine oil and about to flush the tranny and go all synthetic also.

I hate to type this for multiple reasons but three pages of towing with a half ton?

If you want to tow, get a 3/4 ton. Gasser if not very often, diesel if more often. I do not pull for a living but I pull a trailer a lot. Mostly bumper pulls in the 12K or less GVW (trailer only). I have a diesel '13 SRW Megacab with rear bags and it's been great. You don't really need the bags most of the time but they improve the ride so much and keep the lights from pointing in everyone's eyes. I have 135K miles on it now. This is us last Friday leaving my house with a 30' GN, two EB's heading to SLSD (Bonco Takeover) and 2500# all Jed Clampett on the front that I delivered to a customer on the way (the ride was awesome):

I really don't pay attention to mileage too much--seems to me like they are all pretty much the same. If you want to pull the hills, it takes fuel. I had zero problems pulling the above load but I've grossed a lot more (here's a 0-60 video I put on youtube in 2013 where I scaled 31,600 pounds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrh20vOZmqM).

My .02 is that if you are buying something to tow, get a 3/4 ton or larger. Like I said, gasser if you tow once in a while or diesel if you tow more often. And if you even remotely like room in the rear, get a mega. I'll probably get flamed for posting this on this forum but I have had great experiences with two different diesel mega's.

I have to agree, if you tow you need a big truck.

Here's mine.

A few weeks ago I brought this thread back from the past. Asking how everyone with an Eco boost F150 was doing with their trucks. After reading all the great reply's, (thank you everyone) I started searching for my next F150. I began my search with the decision that I would take the best truck I could find equipped with either the 5.0 V8 or 3.5 V6.

Well last weekend I made a purchase and I end up with a 2013, equipped with the 5.0 V8. The truck is in excellent condition and with only 22000 miles on the clock. It's equipped for towing up to 10500 lbs., featuring 3.55 limited slip and full electric locking rear differential. Also has back up camera, traction control, anti trailer sway control and trailer brake control. So far I'm very pleased with the truck and looking forward to using it for my daily driver for several years.

Here are a couple pictures and to keep it some what Bronco related I include a couple side by side shots with my 76.
