Got my larger pulley on today, no more squeal and it charges just fine at idle and I didn't have to tighten the snot out of it. Happy, Happy, Happy;D

Anyone have a part number I could use to try and find a larger pulley locally?

I know this thread is a bit old, but I didn't want to start yet another 3g upgrade thread so I thought I'd just tack on information here.

I've had a 3g on my bronco for 2 years now. It's great except for a few things.

1) Squeal on startup (single V belt)
2) Squeal with lights on at idle (occasionally)
3) Eats belts about every 6 months due to the squeal
4) Carriage bolt for tension. (The hole was untapped so I slid a carriage bolt front to back and tightened from the back. What a pain to tension).
5) Mega fuse inline with the wire. It was taking allot of vibration and near failure.

This week I had the bronco down for a chevy disc conversion and decided to tweak the install a bit. Here's what I did.

1) Bought a helicoil kit to tap the tension hole to 3/8-16. The hole was the perfect size to tap for the helicoil.

2) Bought a new double v belt pulley. I just googled "colorado springs alternator repair" and up popped a local shop that does speedometer and alternator repairs. I called and explained what I wanted. A couple hours and $10 later I had a new pully. He even gave me a thin brass washer as a shim in case I thought I needed it. I did.

3) Bought a new mega fuse and holder off of amazon for about $16 (free 2 day delivery with prime, love it). Holder and fuse sold separately.

You can also downsize to a 90 amp alt,,,,,,I got mine from a 1993 Aerostar.

I don't have it installed yet, so I can't comment on the squeal factor. I imagine its less stress on everything because of the lower amperage.

I think I'll end up taping the mounting hole someday as well, as I know what you mean about it being a pain to tighten under load. The larger pulley I bought was the ticket for us though. Stopped the squeal completely.

Definitely a possibility, but mine squealed like a banshee with only a 70 amp 1g alternator. So in that case it was not simply more potential amperage, but very likely the larger mass of all the spinning stuff too.
Your 90 suggestion might be more valid than in my case though, as the 3g is smaller in diameter at least. Don't know the working weight of the rotating mass, but it could be less as well.

Let us know how it works out. I would hope at least for "less" noise, if not completely gone.

Good luck.

After taking care of the problem with the alt. the PS decided it would take over the annoyance. It has a hard time fighting the locker when wheeling. I think part of the problem is it only contacts about 1/3rd of the pulley since I have an A/C right above it. I will be putting a serpentine system on it now.
