I've put together at least a dozen NP435 to Dana 20 adapters over the years, but this is new to me.

This is the first time I've run into this casting I guess. There is no way to get the upper left bolt in due to the mount for the t-case shifter.

The only way I can see this working is to run a bolt or stud from the inside of the transmission then use a nut on the adapter side.

Anyone have another solution to this?

I don't remember that when I did mine.

I did save this pic when I was working on mine and couldn't figure out why it was boar-hogged out so bad but I guess your situation explains it.

Looks like an AA adapter. I remember having a similar clearance problem back when we did our 435 conversion in '92. We carved some of the aluminum out with a Dremel or something similar to what .94 OR's photo shows.

I called AA this morning to see what they had to say. They told me this adapter was from around 1975 and they had no documentation or instructions going that far back. Their suggestion was to put a stud in from inside the transmission and use a nut on the adapter side. It's either that or grinding like others have done.

See this thread...if you think yours is crude, take a look at mine. I think I have the prototype.

Mine had studs in the lower two transmission holes, and I think I ended up using studs for the uppers the second time I had it apart. Dealing with this adapter ranks as one of the worst hassles I've dealt with. Even the lower socket screws on the T-case are a royal pain.

As Quick&Dirty mentioned in the above thread, be careful to not use studs that are too long into the transmission case as they will contact the reverse gear. Even with studs, you may have to start the nuts before you fully mate the adapter to the transmission to allow enough room to get the nuts on.
