Prices are going to vary wildly. For a complete color change you're looking at pulling the doors, tailgate, hood, possibly the windshield frame, etc. Do you have a hard top and will it be painted too? Are you looking for an excellent show quality paint job with perfect body work? Are there rusty panels that need to be repaired or replaced? Are there dents to address?

The prices range anywhere from $500 for those discount paint shop chains to $7000-8000 for a perfect paint job with little to no orange peel, etc.

in CA a cheap maaco job will run you about $1500 including taxes. most of the decent shops are running 5k for a "cheap job".

I have been looking around in Indiana, Most places are about 5 grand if the body work is "mostly" done.

For a scuff and shoot color change at a reputable shop will be around 4K. That is if you can find a shop that would do it. Our shop doesn't do work on older vehicles because the painter doesn't like to do them. :D Most body shops only work on insurance work because it is more profitable.

I found the same to be true. However, if you have the time, you can often get a really good deal from a little shop if you don't mind waiting. They can work on it when they have time. Mine is at a shop now, and I keep getting bumped for insurance work, however, I could not possible get this good of a deal without being willing to wait.

I am paying less than $4k, and I should be posting final pics of the work later this week.

Ask lots of questions when shopping for a shop to paint your vehicle. You also need to be clear with them about the materials they use on your vehicle. For example, some shops will use a cheap clear instead of the brand name clear. If you want the cheaper price/clear let them know. I only use Spies clear but alot of shops out there will use the junk clears.

I got a "vague" quote from the local Ford dealer(have friends working there) of $1500. This quote reflects ready to shoot meaning all prep work done and self-etching primer sprayed by me. I have my 66 down to the metal right now with a little more body work to be done.

This quote also reflects a squeeze it at their conveinence and I have to reassemble the truck. Single stage 2k paint

I'm still debating if I want to this go route or just do it myself.

I am in the same boat you are. Thinking of building a rotating stand to mount it and paint it on. (

Thanks for all the help. Its a frame-off with little to no rust. No dents in panels either. A quaility paint job, nothing cheap.

We had the Mare painted about 15 years ago $4000 at the time with no doors or top just door inserts. When it was first done it looked like they had dumped a bucket of clear all over it. You can still buff this thing out and it looks good 15 years later, if you can see past the dents.;D

One thing to mention is all the horror stories we hear about rigs that are still at the painters a year or two later.%) Don't go cheap. Find someone with a good reputation and then don't tell them you are not in a hurry.

X2 Find someone with a quality reputation. Personally, I would try and possibly find someone that likes doing older cars and trucks and is not just focused on the insurance work. Good luck! ;D

I did all the metal work, patch panels and such. I disassembled everything and the painter sandblasted and primed. I took it back and did a little more work on it. They smoothed it and painted the body, top inside and out and dash. I had the inside of the tub, bumpers, nerf bars and tool box LineXed and I assembled the parts.
I am just shy of 7k in all.

In all seriousness, you'll be hard pressed to find a production shop that will touch a complete paint job, if you do I'd seriously be concerned about their work as they make 4-5X the money doing insurance jobs over your rig taking up their shop for months on end. Before I painted mine (myself) I was quoted $5-15k for a complete paint job. Where I work now, our 'cheap' paint jobs start at $5500, and go to the mid $20's:eek:...

Call around and find a local hot rod shop that would be willing to do you paint work, or enroll at a community college auto shop program and take bodywork classes, you'll learn how to do body work, and you can paint it yourself in a paint booth...

5 grand here in Mississippi but for that amount they rub the body down with some type of acidic compound that eats away any surface rust that might be present, they replace all of the door and window seals, and guarantee the paint job to be bubble and clearcoat peel free for the life of the vehicle. Pretty impressive they warranty it that long.
