Explorer swap timing

So Ive got a zero mile 97 explorer gt40P motor, bronco timing cover to run it with all the stock accessories. Using a toms 50oz balancer with the 3 sets of timing marks. Couple questions. Is the firing order different than the earlier 302? And which set of timing marks should I be using? Right now I'm trying the closest set and no good.

In short, late model 302 "HO" is different from the early 302 firing order. This assumes you also have the explorer motor cam as well.

For the timing marks, find top dead center on cyclinder 1 and see which timing marks are on your balancer.

The firing order follows the camshaft. If you are running the '97 Explorer cam, it is the '97 Explorer firing order.

As for the damper with 3 sets of timing marks, that gets fun. I would start by removing the bolt at the front of the crankshaft. You can now see the keyway. Put the keyway straight up at the 12 O'clock position. Now look at the pointer and highlight the set of timing marks that match the pointer. Put the bolt back in. Now you know which of the 3 timing marks is the right one for your needs.

Guessing you are using your old distributor and a carb on the new engine? Did you swap the distributor driven gear? The gear from a flat tappet cam will fit a roller cam, BUT the materials are not compatible and the gears will self destruct and fill the engine with metal shavings. Just trying to make sure you don't hurt the new engine.
