Question, just to confirm on a Dana 44 after reading the service literature, the pinion preload is shim set as opposed to crush collar set. So, when changing the pinion seal I can retorque the nut to the 200-225 foot pounds as opposed to having to matchmark the nut to the pinion shaft and count revolutions to set the nut back in the exact same place, correct?

You’re correct, the pinion bearings are shimmed like a solid spacer. When you replace the seal, install a new pinion nut and put a little RTV behind the washer. It helps to keep the oil from wicking past the splines.
