battery drain question

i've got a 76 bronco with an optimal red top. the battery is draining with the engine off. suspect it might be the exterior voltage regulator. it's extremely rusty. can anyone explain how this draining happens electrically when the engine is off? just trying to understand the physics of it. thanks.
