It's been a while since I posted on this project so I'm starting a new thread on it. This was the Hammer inspired build thread.
So I decided I needed a utility trailer and really didn't like the looks of the new ones. Then I though for $2000 I should be able to build my own. I saw the thread Hammer did when he built his, so I decided to copy most of his work. Thank you Hammer for the guidance.
I found a bed off a 66 F100 8ft. The guy was making his a short bed and sold the long bed to me for $20. How can I go wrong right. I eat $20 for lunch at McDonalds.
Anyway hauled it home and started measuring

After measurements were checked the cutting began. I split mine right down the middle because I knew I was going to need a whole new floor. So I removed the floor area and sliced it up.

I used my spare bronco tailgate to make sure it was cut right, clamped the crap out of it and started stitching it back together.

New corner bed pieces were fabbed up and tacked in place.

I ordered two stock bronco floor pieces that fit perfect in my newly sectioned truck bed and fit them up.

New bronco wheel tubs were ordered and installed as well.

Next job was to weld all the holes that were drilled in it over the years and to patch the gas cover door in the drivers side. Cleaned it up, made a patch panel and welded it in.

Mostly mocked up and tacked. Doing some final welding and some more measuring. More to follow.

So I got some more done on the trailer Sunday. Got it up on some saw horses to get close to my ride hight.

Finished trimming the second floor section and started welding. I've got everything tacked in so its time to flip it over for the more serious welds and to reinstall the cross braces.

I hope to keep after this project this time. I'm ordering axle stuff this week and as soon as that is here I will start building the frame. It might be a week or two between posts but I want this done before spring so keep an eye out.
Plan is to paint it the same as the bronco down to the pinstripes and maybe even a swing out tire carrier too!!

Very nice!! What are you ordering for an axel? I just bought all new self adjusting brake assemblies for my Bronco Hauler (28ft Enclosed) from Etrailer and was looking at their 3500# axel and 10" electric brakes with 5 on 5 1/2" hubs.......looked pretty interesting!!
Standard free shipping showed up in 2 days.

Unless I find a good deal I'm going to make my own axle. I'll buy the brake kit and spindle kit and probably the springs and hanger kit. My fab buddy next door has the thick tube I need and he's a hell of a welder.
Trying to make one 57" WMS to WMS with 3500 lb capacity.
Biff what did your axle run ya? I might look into a made unit and chop it down if needed.

Also what you think about a swing out spare carrier on the trailer? I'm thinking of making it look just like the back of my bronco! With a stock chrome bumper as well.

That's gonna be nice! Are you going to have anything loaded that would require the tailgate to be down? If so, the spare carrier might be more of a hassle than it's worth.

It 8ft long and 4' between the wheel wells so I can fit a sheet of plywood in it.
That's my only concern if it might get in the way??

Maybe you could mount it directly to the tailgate so it would have the same look without being in the way with the tailgate down.

Why don't you find a Ranch hand bracket so you can lock it on the side when the tailgate needs to be down?

Only pic I have of mine...

Both good ideas. I do have one of those brakets here. My half cab had the side tire mount thing on it when I bought it. Either very doable. I think with the carrier and tire it's going to make the tailgate real heavy?
Thanks guys!

Close to 57" at 60" for $69.99......EZ lube spindles were $40 each!!

Kind of a funky website but awesome guy, great prices. I had a custom width 3500lb axle built with perches welded on at the spacing I wanted and with trailer brakes and it was barely over $200 shipped if I remember right.

Looks like abc is a supplier for agri but better prices. Nice find thank you. I'm ordering tomorrow.
Any thoughts on a drop axle vs straight?? Not a huge cost difference but would there be any benefits??

I can't think of any advantage unless you can't get low enough and have adequate travel without one, aside from that a drop axle just creates some additional leverage to work against the springs.
