You can tell if your door inserts are original by looking closely at the metal backing plates.

The factory ones were made in a stamping press with a dedicated die. This produces a continuous 90° bend all the way around the upper corners.

This is a compound curve that can not be formed when cut and formed on a sheet metal brake like the aftermarket were. The one formed on a brake have 90° flanges on the straight sections, but not in the corners.

Nice, got it! If I ever have the inserts off again, I'll definitely check for that and report back. I just went out and looked....there's no way to see up behind there without removing them unfortunately.

If your sheet metal backing plates are stamped, then that's a 99% chance the insets are original as well. These an be verified when installed.

The TIG welded reproductions are just within the last few years, and only a very limited have been made, so you have a much higher probability of having real ones than reproductions.

Scared to start this question... but should this be a J Shift or T Shift on the floor? The knob that came on it was a J pattern, but as with anything, I have no idea if it was replaced in the past. Either the knob or the transfer case itself could be a switch.

Definitely a T shift. J shift came along in '73.

Cool, thanks....so I think I'm good. The transfer case is a Dana model 20.

Just had a wrong knob and boot maybe? Hopefully so, as that's a much cheaper thing to change out;)

Well guys, my son and I had the pleasure of meeting Jen and her 66 U13. I can’t believe this thing was less than a mile away from me. I can’t believe this young lady has been able to do a majority of the work on this U13. She still has a few things to do to get it road worthy but hopefully that’s where I come in. I took several pictures so please comment. I am not a 66 U13 expert, and by no means is Jen. But she appreciates all those who have commented in her earlier posts. At the moment I feel all she wants to do is get it on the road so I feel the first thing she needs to address is the drum brakes and emergency brake cables. Here goes the pics!

Dana 20 identification

Can you determine just from the photos wether or not this is a T shift or J shift Dana 20 transfer case?

Windshield pics:
Was this windshield converted from vacuume wipers to electric wipers? I’m unfamiliar with what an original 66 windshield should look like. There appears to be more holes along with this spring loaded pin in the center.

Never seen a front axle without locking hubs.

I pulled the glovebox door down to view the warranty tag but the temp tag wasn’t there. Was this not the location for the temp tag for 66? You can see the temp tag on the kick panel drivers side but I thought there would be one in the glovebox as well.

I told Jen I’d be happy to give her a cotter pin to replace the rivet.

Check with Viperwolf1 about that. He's got a database of serial numbers that will come in very handy.
I would have said T-shift based on the number, but looking lower at the actual part number being a D3 makes it a '73 issue part, which "should" mean it's a J-shift.

What do the shift rods look like coming out of the front? T-shift has just simple rods with notches and holes. J-shift has interlocking "paddles" of different shapes on the rods. Makes them very distinctive.

I would say yes to that. The extra holes are a clue for sure, including what looks to be extra bolt holes along the top. With the change between the two styles not only did the spacing on the wipers change, but so did the top holes.
The spring loaded pin is the windshield frame hold-down and goes along with a matching steel loop in the middle of the hood.
It was used from '66 until sometime in '69 when they changed to electric wipers.

Never seen a front axle without locking hubs.

They were an option throughout the production of Broncos if I remember.
But at least during the early years, "free running hubs" were optional.
Those look like factory covers, but I don't know if they all looked like that or not. It's the same cover that went over the drive slugs/flanges on later full-size, full-time 4wd trucks with the NP203 transfer case.

Speaking of a drive flange/slug. That's what is in there in lieu of a lockout, or locking hub as we mostly call them.
Solid steel, splined on the inside and outside, and usually still used a big spring behind it like the stock locking hubs had.

I pulled the glovebox door down to view the warranty tag but the temp tag wasn’t there. Was this not the location for the temp tag for 66? You can see the temp tag on the kick panel drivers side but I thought there would be one in the glovebox as well.

Nope. No glovebox door tag until '68 or '69 I don't think.
The kick panel label was the tag.
