Picked up the body cart and braces from Keith (Schenkapotomus). If you want to take a look at a proper frame off resto, swing by Keith's place. His rig is beautiful. Unfortunately, it made me realize how far I had to go, as I am just beginning mine.

Frustrating front end crap today. I attempted to install the body braces but I could not remove the door latch screws from the post assembly. Lubed them up and moved on to removing the fenders from the grill. Damn those body clips. Most busted and I had to use a combination of vise grip, cusing and blood to get them out. By the end of the day, body braces not installed and fenders still attached to the grill. On the flip side, as I walked away from it for a bit, the boy and I played a few good games or hoops.

Well I got the cart and I think I have most things disconnected. I finally squared away the garage so I have room for both the chassis and the body. Trying to find about four guys locally to help take the body off this coming Sunday. Green beer on hand.

Thanks,
Will

Great job so far and keep up the good work. A friend told me once that in these restos, no problem is too great that it can't be solved by throwing money at it. I proved that many times over! Good luck to you and like he said, thanks for your service. (My father was a Marine during WWII, luckily for me he survived!)

Thank you sir for your service.

This is like a 'De-Ja-Vue' for me, mine looked exactly like that when I started it. You may want to take a chipping hammer and lightly tap along the rockers also, the paint was all that was left holding mine together%)

I had to use a plasma to get the fenders seperated from the grill. My hinge posts and floors were rotted out also, look close at the upper front corners of the engine bay, there is a lap joint there that was about 3/8" thick because of the rust swell.

Nice looking truck and good luck.

Randy,

If you leave right now and drive straight through you might make it by Sunday afternoon. Quit being such a candy ass.

Finally got organized and had a few guys over yesterday to take the body off. Today I got the exhaust off, front and rear drive shafts and the bumpers. Bumpers were by far the biggest PIA. The running gear is in decent shape, as I had known. It will all be cleaned up and painted. A new stock lift will go on as well. The body is another story. I will have it blasted this summer to get a true estimate of the cancer, but the door post, striker post, tail gate, hood (lip), kick panels and floor boards all have some major rust.

Ok. After a long lay off we are back at it. I have been picking away removing everything from the frame.

I had lost momentum and was seriously considering bailing on this project and getting a Bronco in better shape. However, my 10 year old daughter looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned it and stated that the Bronco was part of the family and we need to finish it so it can be her first car. She wins. I love that kid. Frame is cleaned up, I will pressure washer soon and hit it with some POR15. The body is a mess, but I will deal with one thing at a time.

Frame is cleaned up and ready for paint. Scrapper, degreaser, pressure washer, and grinder with wire wheels. My hands are still humming. The first photos has a stamp, looks like C6TA. Would that mean a 66 frame? The vin on the frame matches glove box and is a 70.

Well. After getting into the body a little more, I was thinking it might be above my ability level. I do not have a welder, nor can I weld. I swung by a local auto body shop to talk to them. I have seen several older cars there getting work done as I pass by there almost daily. A guy came up to my house to check out my Bronco. His estimates seemed awfully high. Pictures below show the worst of it, although there is more rust. He estimated parts to be ~$1,500; both inner fenders, kick panels, door pillar, door striker, rockers, (inner&outer). That is about right as I look as vendors. He quoted me 90-100 hours to fix the tub, ~$10,000. Then paint, his estimate on paint was $12-15,000. I told him I just want a decent paint job, not a show truck. Neither of these quotes are in my current budget.

After he gave me the estimate I asked if he wanted to do the job, or was he pricing so high to make me look elsewhere. His answer was kind of neutral. Thoughts?

High for a basic driver but then again it is a frame off. I'm no body/paint man but I have over 15k in my paint (and body) work. Either way 25k is WAY too much unless its a full on show car IMO

Got to painting the frame. Used KBS Coatings Frame kit. Really happy with the outcome. The kit was about $60. Came with cleaner, rust removal and etching, and paint. I bought an extra quart of paint (another $30) as some of the reviews said they needed more. I do not think I will need it. I will use the other quart on the axles and other drivetrain items. I did two coats. I still have the underside of the frame to do, but so far looks great. Wife even asked if I bought a new frame. I bought the satin black paint. Looks glossy to me, but still very happy.

Here is a link to my initial question about painting the frame http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=226935

Frame looks great. I was thinking 90-100/hr was a little steep until I saw where you live%) I would think about getting a small welder and learning. A 110v unit will do a decent job on sheetmetal and isn't that much and for spot welding you don't need much technical training. It's more about the prep.

I just bought one that is about the same condition, but I have another body to drop on it. I was going to fix it up for an old gent. but he didn't want to put that much into it so we cut a deal. The parts list was about what you were told but the labor was a third. I was cutting him a deal because he is a Vet. and had been cheated by 2 other operators.

I had purchased some extra paint from KBS while doing my frame, so I decided to clean up my 9" rear end. This KBS paint really covers nicely. This is just one coat. I will put another on today.
