What they said. While the Chilton's and Hayne's books will help with general stuff, neither is likely to ever go anywhere near a gear change. Other than to show you an acceptable pattern that is perhaps, and maybe a nice exploded view.
Nope, for that I can just see it now.... "Since changing ring and pinion gears can only be done by a professional with big-boy pro tools that you losers reading our book are never going to have, take it to a pro"

Heck, my Hayne's book (which I happen to like a lot by the way) won't even give the alignment specifications! When you get to that paragraph, it says that "since alignments can't be done by anyone but a professional with an alignment rack, it doesn't make sense for us to even waste the space to give you the numbers here."
Ok, so I'm praphrasing. But that's exactly what it feels like they're saying every time I read that bit.
At least the old Chilton's book gave you the specifications, even though they too did not think you could do it in your driveway, or garage.
Long way of saying, Factory Shop Manuals for the really good stuff.
