    9" Axle issue

I actually got the parts off of Amazon. Allstar performance and they were very good quality. I had a local weld shop cut the axle tube ends and weld the new ones on.

    9" Axle issue

Yes! Sorry. I tried to go back and edit it and couldn’t figure it out

    9" Axle issue

The solution was the axle ends were worn and had to be cut off and new ones welded on.

    9" Axle issue

Thanks for the great feedback. My mechanical mindset (never having torn a diff apart) assumed something besides the splines supported the axle shafts near the diff. I will take all the feedback and keep digging!

    9" Axle issue

Thanks so much. In taking it apart everything looked in great shape. No major metal shavings anywhere and the diff hadn’t been out in a long time. I will post some pics of the axle shaft ends later so everyone can see them. Odd that those two carriers have different id

    9" Axle issue

Posted some pics so you can see. I don’t think the one carrier bearing is right. Does the id of the carrier bearing support the axle shaft? In my eyes it should… but I don’t know

You are correct. I bought this truck and restored it, so it hasn’t been on the road on 30years…. God only knows what someone did to it prior!

    9" Axle issue

If you open up picture 1 and picture 2, look at the what I consider the ID of the carrier bearings in relation to the low point of the splines. On the side giving me problems there is about 1/8” gap, meaning the axle shaft doesn’t even touch the id of the carrier bearing. I am guessing it...

    9" Axle issue

I think I found it…. The inside diameter of my carrier bearings is different on the two sides No. The ID of the carrier bearings is different. If you have an email I can send you pics (sorry not sure how to send pics thru the thread?). The ID of the bearing looks like it should be about...

    302 badge correct on 1972?

I think I will put a 302 on my 71 built but maybe 72 sold…. I will go the new way and mount it with 3M tape so it can always come off with a heat gun…. Someone will likely gladly point out the flaw at a car show!

I could try new axle bearing retainers.. any idea if the slotted ones are any good?

    9" Axle issue

Everything seems good. The axle shaft doesn’t seem worn. The part I don’t know is if whatever the piece is that the axle shaft goes into in the third member might be worn? Would that allow movement like this?

    302 badge correct on 1972?

From factory mine was a bare bones heavy duty package with a 302. It has been restored probably twice. When I got it the side marker lights had been filled in but the wiring was there, so this type of change makes it hard to tell what may have been there from factory. Guessing I had no fancy...
